Timau Mission -- Updates on the Children

During August, Sister Joanne and Sister Fran visited our outdoor mass and brought an update on the children at the Timau Mission that our community has adopted.   We have committed to continue our support for these children:  Evans, Duncan and Freddie.

        Freddie Ntawa

Freddie was only 5 when he was sponsored by the JNMC in the fall of 2010.  He is now 7 and in 2nd grade and is doing very well in school.  His mother still struggles with her depression and making ends meet.  Freddie’s oldest sister, Josephine, has a child, and they live with them while Josephine seeks work, adding two more mouths to feed. Freddie’s other siblings are all in grade and high school.  The family lives from hand-to-mouth, but thanks to this sponsorship, they get weekly food in Freddie’s name.  Freddie himself gets schooling, shoes and uniform, books, birthday and Christmas presents, and medical and dental expense. In order to help the family become self-reliant, we gave his mother a sewing machine plus free courses in our technical school so that she can do jobs in her home for her neighbors and earn some money.  Even though her customers are few, at least there are some coming to her, so she is filling a need for them, and feeling self-respect and pride in her accomplishments.  We also gave her seeds so she could grow beans.  At the left is Freddie’s current picture taken in June 2012.

       Duncan Mutwiri

Duncan was abandoned as a baby and was taken in by his grandmother.  He was “adopted” by JNMC in the fall of 2010.  He is now 2 ½ and is growing strong.  He is very attached to his grandmother.  He is quiet when he visits us, but his grandma says he talks a lot when he is home.   He needs treatment from time to time for colds and stomach upsets, but in general is growing quite healthily.   His grandmother seeks out odd jobs wherever she can and they live from hand to mouth.

Evans Muriungi
Evans is now a junior in high school.  He is a good student, and hopes to be a Kiswahili language teacher in the future.    Evans will begin his senior year in January 2013.   A letter written by Evans is attached below, where he thanks our community for providing the financial support for his education.
